A Message from our Regional Coordinator, Barbara Briggs:
As noted on the invitation, both Jane Austen’s birthday and Northanger Abbey will be celebrated on December 14. Our panel will no doubt give us fresh insights of Catherine Morland and her adventures in Bath and at the Abbey. I’ll be rereading NA because there is always a detail found in rereading that I overlooked or forgot from my last reading and I want to fully appreciate those ideas that our panel might put forth. Best reason of all, settling into NA promises calm, retreat from world chaos, release of tense muscles and embrace of delicious ease.
“Oh, it is only a novel!” you might quote, but what a novel, “…only some work in which the greatest powers of the mind are displayed, in which the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the happiest delineation of its varieties, the liveliest effusions of wit and humour are conveyed to the world in the best chosen language.” As only Jane could write it.
